Can we call a poem generated by a computer art?

As a novice writer, I find the thought of using AI utterly disgusting. As an ML enthusiast, I tend to believe the same way.

Some may say that it is just unethical – to sign your name for what you have not created. Hower programs still generate content based on prompts that users write. So, where the line should be drawn?

From the start.

From the start, those two are separate matters.

We - human beings - use language to attempt to convey concepts and objects to each other. Philosophers (for instance Russell and Wittgenstein) have been arguing about the language itself for centuries. One can speak of adapting the “thingspace” model, but there still is no clear answer. The aim of artificial intelligence algorithms can be varied: some are developed to find the most efficient solutions (GPS navigation), some are developed to gain the ability to do autonomous operations in the environment (AI agents) and some are developed to portray given information in a new way (LLMs). I believe generative AI is the latter. It analyses training data and proceeds to base its computations upon it. Therefore, the process is entirely different from human’s: one is getting from point A in the direction of point B, going forward, hopping from one road to another and creating trails even if point B will be always behind the horizon; and the second is finding routes from A to B on the map. One is the art of humans, and the other – is the art of who had created it (not used).

Of course, AI is very helpful – in many cases, it saves a lot of time for the user. It has already been part of our lives, even if we do not notice its implementations directly. It saved thousands if not millions of lives and propelled scientific fields forward. It is undeniable that we are influenced by it in our roots. Nevertheless, what is more important is our perception of such technologies. It is how we feel about it and how we utilize it. Unfortunately, the biggest part of users (who do not possess advanced AI technology knowledge) often misinterpret the existence and functions, therefore it results in heart-aching misusages (for instance submitting generated entries for non-AI competitions or school assignments).

The future of AI is not determined by scientists or businessmen, but solely by the public. Some take it as a major threat that will overtake us, some take it as granted magic, nevertheless, it is just 0s and 1s. It is the numbers that I find beauty in.
